It was a Hot Time in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday, September 9th when 1950 grads, their spouses and guests, and friends from other classes gathered at the Holiday Inn and Suites to revisit those wonderful years at GW and renew old friendships. There were 160 in attendance.

The celebration got an early start when many gathered on Friday night for cocktails, snacks, and photos. “Remember whens” were the order of the evening, and everyone joined in singing the GW Fight Song and the Seniors Drinking Song. Most of us remembered most of the words.

On Saturday afternoon, those who traveled to the school roamed the halls looking for their old homerooms, lockers, and the gymnasium. The gym is now in a separate building, and the auditorium now bears the name Irving Lindsey, one of the teachers that none of us had forgotten.

Back at the hotel, a large banner over the door to the ballroom welcomed everyone to the banquet and dance on Saturday evening. It was time to party-down! Many whoops of recognition resounded throughout the Hotel foyer during the reception. After all, it had been 50 years!

Before the dinner was served, Sally Ward Stumpf welcomed everyone, and introduced Rabbi James Rudin, Class of 1951, who gave the invocation. Later in the evening, Class President Mort Bregman spoke of our days in GW, and made a comparison of the way things were in our time, with the way they are today. Truly, we lived and went to school in a wonderful time. Huck Thomas, Class of ’47, spoke of the benefits of membership in the GWAA.

Then more singing. Former members of the glee clubs and others led the everyone in singing “On GW,” the Seniors’ Drinking Song, and of course, our Alma Mater. Grateful classmates found the words printed in the program.

Wonderful big band sounds from Satin Sound provided dance music of the 40s and 50s. While some danced, others perused the memorabilia table, and mingled with other classmates, renewing old friendships and getting caught up on the past 50 years.

Please give a big hand to your classmates who made this all happen - your Reunion Committee: Dave and Ruth Baker; Harriet SHAPIROBondareff; Jenny WREN Conway and her husband Dave; Elva MARSHALL Fones; Frances (Gigi) MIDDLETON Fulmer; Leonard Goldman and his wife Rhoda; Betty HATTON Griffith; Norman Grimm; Robert Haith; Kenneth Hewitt and his wife Elsa; Betty HOLDER Hodges; Fordie Thompson; and Don Tucker and his wife Peggy LAWLER Tucker of the '51 class.

And what’s this about a Hot Time? Well, at about 10:15 pm the fire alarm in the hotel went off! Smoke filled the hallway outside the ballroom. The rest of the party was held in the parking lot next to the fire engines. In spite of that, it was a grand evening full of fun and remembering. Someone asked me when the next reunion will be. Well……
