THE SEPTEMBER WNS
We are now at a TOTAL of 83 different people over the past 14 months, with classmates from 43, 47, 49, 50 - 56, 58, 61 - 72.  The drastic fluctuation of the number of people that have been in attendance over the past 3 months, prompts the organizers of the WNS to keep it at Squire Rockwells as they have been EXTREMELY UNDERSTANDING of the vacation season, and have not complained ONCE about the number of attendees present at any of the socials.
The next month Wednesday Night Social will be held on October 2nd, 2002 @ 6 pm.. Try to come by and join your fellow classmates from GW, from all years.

THE AUGUST WNS
The August get-together marked the 1-year anniversary of the Wednesday Night Social.
As the first anniversary of the terrible events of September approaches, we will share in a national sense of grief and remembrance unparalleled in our lifetime.
A now familiar sense of loss, violation and lingering disbelief will be all too prominent from the time our feet hit the floor in the morning until we finally put the day behind us.
We believe that it is extremely important for each person to reflect, remember and respond in ways that are individually meaningful.  at the same time, there is comfort to be found in sharing the moment with one another.  While we cannot change the past, we should work everyday to change the future.
The next month Wednesday Night Social will be held on September 4th, 2002 @ 6 pm.. Try to come by and join your fellow classmates from GW, from all years.

THE JULY WNS
The August get-together will mark the 1-year anniversary of the Wednesday Night Social.

During this past year, the WNS has had a very varied attendance that has included 79 different alumni from GWHS classes, representing the following years..  1943,1947,1949-1956, 1958, 1961-1972.
While the gathering has averaged about 19-20 people, there have been as many as 31 and only as few as 13 of our former classmates attending any one of these functions.
Even though we're reasonably happy at the Squire Rockwell's location, we continue to encourage additional input and ideas on different places to hold the WNS which have ample parking, a varied menu and in a centralized and easily accessible location.
Donna Teter and her husband John have made inquires into the facilities provided by the restaurant in the newly renovated Radisson Hotel at the corner of Fairfax and Montgomery Streets in downtown Alexandria and also recently checked out King Street Blues in Alexandria. They will report back at the next WNS on their experience and impressions.
Along other lines, Don Banister is also trying to plan a CRAB FEAST dinner at one of the local CRAB houses, but I do not have any more info on this as this time.
We a looking forward to a good turnout for the next WNS on August 7, in order to get a solid majority opinion from the group on just where we should go with the Social.

The next month Wednesday Night Social will be held on August 7th, 2002 @ 6 pm.. Try to come by and join your fellow classmates from GW, from all years.

THE MAY WNS
This month was a first time visit to Squire Rockwell's. It was very successful and was attended by 24 classmates and friends. Nice seating arrangements and service. Separated cozy room. Meals were varied. Everyone seemed pleased. We plan to continue looking for alternative places and functions, e.g., crab feast, cruise, etc. - But, the next WNS will be at this same place. So see you all there.
The next month Wednesday night social will be held on June 5th, 2002 @ 6 pm.. Try to come by and join your fellow classmates from GW, from all years.

THE JANUARY WNS for DECEMBER ~ JANUARY WAS A HUGE SUCCESS...
SANTAClick on small photo to enlarge.
  • The organizers of the GWAA Wednesday night social, held the first Wednesday of each month at The Main Street Restaurant in Annandale, went out of their way for the December-January Social.  The 25 (or so) people attending were treated to a fun evening, good food, good socializing, good memories of GW, and SANTA CLAUS. Santa handed out gifts to those who were lively enough to sit on his lap AND have their pictures taken with the good natured Santa.
  • Dave Beach, who some time ago established a web site for the class of 55 that is also utilized by the '54 class, was at the social and was glad that he had come. He has asked some of his classmates to try and make it too. He said, "It would be good for our mid-50's generation to circulate with the 'youngsters'. To sort of give them a sense of history, ya'know? But, seriously, it's a nice change to get together for dinner rather than only doing the luncheon circuit."
  • Larry Dowdy, GWAA board member was at the social, and even tried to steal the show away from SANTA, but (fortunately) Santa prevailed and Larry quietly took his seat for the sit-down dinner that followed.
  • The waiter sure earned his tip for the evening, trying to keep up with all 6 of the tables that he was working.  We have talked to the management of Main Street and the next time we have this many people for a sit-down dinner, they have told us that they will give us more than 1 waiter.
BUT, overall, a fun time was had by all those attending.
Try to come by and join your fellow classmates from GW, from all years.

AND WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU AND YOURS A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR 2002.
-- John & Donna '65
