UP-COMING GWAA ACTIVITIES:

This 2011 GWAA Picnic is definitely scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2011.
More information will be in the next issue (August 2011) of our On GW newsletter
.

PLEASE NOTE: This year, we felt the need to change the location of the annual GWAA picnic. This decision was NOT an easy one. It was based on several factors:
1) The U. S. Park Service increased the rental cost by over 75% during the last 3 years!
2) The rules and regulations of what you can or cannot do in the park have been made much more restrictive.
3) Parking for disabled is very limited with no official enforcement.
4) Unpredictable weather conditions have always been a worrisome problem.
Therefore, the picnic committee has been looking for a venue that would solve all those problems,  be large enough for our group and still be relatively easy to get to for everyone.

We have decided on a new indoor hall which is owned and operated by the Fairfax County Police Association.

It's located in Fairfax Co. adjacent to Popes Head Park
just off of Popes Head Rd. and near it's intersection with the 7100 Parkway.

It was held November 26th and 27th, 2010 at the Holiday Inn, 625 First Street, Alexandria, VA.The gala celebration began with a fantastic all-day-some-night Hospitality Party on Friday, November 26th leading into a rocking Cocktail Hour, followed by a fabulous Dinner/Dance/Banquet on November 27th.  The entertainment was THE FABULETTES. There were many nice door prizes. Invitations were mailed out in early 2010 to the '55 Class and other G.W. Alumni to join in the festivities who were, as always, VERY welcome.  For questions the contacts were: Peggy-Lambert Barnett or John-Sue Cox

CLASS of '55  --- 50th Reunion: The class of 1955 had a fabulous and memorable fiftieth reunion on the Thanksgiving weekend of 2005 at the First Street Holiday Inn. About 200 people attended. The class hosted an open Hospitality Room on the second floor with free drinks and food the entire time starting Friday afternoon through Saturday.  On Saturday evening our Banquet-Dance began with a great dance band which featured, three female singers - The Fabulettes. A large screen video slide show with pictures from the past was presented in the background during the intros and meal. The food was excellent as was the music and ambiance. But the hit of the night for the class was a 35 minute (with encore) vocal performance by our own Prexie professionals - Bobby Morris, Bill Potts, Billy Cleary and Jim Godwin (back on drums), who sang and played a rockin an rollin set with Mike Boran (former Decca recording star and also a GWalum) and his wife, Christine.  Bobby, Bill and Mike had been meeting and practicing in secret for about ten months preparing for this mutually-memorable experience. It was definitely a totally unexpected and enjoyable surprise for the class.  Every attendee received a gift bag that contained; a handsome marble paperweight with an inscribed The Golden One logo, a reunion handbook with many memorable photos and a complete listing of classmate names, with addresses and phone numbers. Each bag also held a commemorative CD, produced by Dave Beach, of 28 of the most representative songs of our generation. The 55 Reunion Committee, which included John and Sue Cox, David Beach, Peggy and Lambert Barnett, Julia Gunn Shoup, Wilda Kesterson Armstrong, Ealine Mosel, Janet Hewitt George, Sonny and Sada Weitzel Johnson, Bill Duff, Bim Perry, Betty Berkes Treger and Barclay Bell Nakhleh, worked for about 4 years to plan this fine affair.

CLASS of '56  --- 50th Reunion: The event was held  in early October 6-8, 2006. The dates set aside for the gala marking the 50th reunion for the Class of 1956. It will be held at the Hilton Hotel King Street, across the street from the King Street Metro Station. A hospitality suite will be open beginning Friday evening and through much of Saturday for registration and refreshments. Saturday morning brings a tour of the "new GW", beginning at 11, then "Art on the Avenue" in the new, transformed (and hot) Delray for an optional afternoon activity. Cocktails, dinner and dancing will begin at 5:30 p.m. Brunch follows Sunday morning at Landini Brothers restaurant (included in the $95 price) to cap off the festivities.
