The
GREAT BAKE-OFF
held at the GWAA picnic September 26th, 2009, was a huge success as we had
12 entries in the contest. Following the photos below is a list of
all of the entries as well as
a designation of the winners. First prize in both the pie baking and cake
making were rewarded with a first place ribbon and $50.00 in prize money.
(See the list and results in the table below)
We are hoping that this is a tradition
that is continued in the future years of the picnic and that more people
choose to participate.
It
would be nice to have more pie entries, as Marlene was the only person
presenting a pie this year.
After the judges awarded the prizes, the goodies were consumed by the
attendees of the picnic that were still at the picnic and there were VERY
FEW LEFTOVERS. Everyone was delighted at the
option of having the cakes
and/or pies to choose from versus the traditional cookies.
I would like to say a special Thank You to those who participated and
donated their time and effort into making this years bakeoff a tremendous
success.
The bakeoff judges were John Teter, Debby Palmer-Mills and me. Judging
was based on the following categories: taste, appearance, freshness,
creativity, doneness and topping/icing, with points being awarded for each
category and the total points determining the winners.
I hope that everyone had a chance to see the table setup. I wanted to
make sure that the GWHS blue and gold colors were well represented.

CLASS of '55 - 50th Reunion:
The class of 1955 had a fabulous and memorable fiftieth reunion on the
Thanksgiving weekend of 2005 at the First Street Holiday Inn. About 200 people
attended. The class hosted an open Hospitality Room on the second floor with
free drinks and food the entire time starting Friday afternoon through
Saturday. On Saturday evening our Banquet-Dance began with a great dance band
which featured, three female singers - The Fabulettes. A large screen video
slide show with pictures from the past was presented in the background during
the intros and meal. The food was excellent as was the music and ambiance.
But the hit of the night for the class was a 35 minute (with encore) vocal
performance by our own Prexie professionals - Bobby Morris, Bill Potts, Billy
Cleary and Jim Godwin (back on drums), who sang and played a rockin an
rollin set with Mike Boran (former Decca recording star and also a GWalum)
and his wife, Christine. Bobby, Bill and Mike had been meeting and practicing
in secret for about ten months preparing for this mutually-memorable
experience. It was definitely a totally unexpected and enjoyable surprise for
the class.
Every attendee received a gift bag that contained; a
handsome marble paperweight with an inscribed The Golden One logo, a reunion
handbook with many memorable photos and a complete listing of classmate names,
with addresses and phone numbers. Each bag also held a commemorative CD,
produced by Dave Beach, of 28 of the most representative songs of our
generation.
The 55 Reunion Committee, which included John and Sue
Cox, David Beach, Peggy and Lambert Barnett, Julia Gunn Shoup, Wilda Kesterson
Armstrong, Ealine Mosel, Janet Hewitt George, Sonny and Sada Weitzel Johnson,
Bill Duff, Bim Perry, Betty Berkes Treger and Barclay Bell Nakhleh, worked
for about 4 years to plan this fine affair.
CLASS of '54 -50th
Reunion was
held on September 11 and 12, 2004. For further details Click on the title.
CLASS of '64: There is going to be a reunion and there has been a reunion committee meeting in Alexandria to get the planning started. We are looking at the weekends of June 19th or 26th. We should have the date tied down in a couple of weeks.
John Kemper
will send a notice out via e-mail when the dates are set. Keep a look out for a '64 reunion web page.
CLASS of '63

October 11, 2003. Click on heading for more details.
